{"id":20908,"date":"2021-08-31T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kefim.org\/?p=20908"},"modified":"2021-08-30T19:16:04","modified_gmt":"2021-08-30T16:16:04","slug":"economic-freedom-and-income-mobility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kefim.org\/en\/economic-freedom-and-income-mobility\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic freedom and income mobility | New study in  conjunction with Fraser Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong>New study shows increased economic freedom leads to greater income mobility for workers and entrepreneurs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Economic freedom enhances income mobility while the poor in unfree nations have fewer opportunities to escape poverty and build prosperity, finds a new study released today by KEFiM in conjunction with Canada\u2019s Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan public policy think-tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key findings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The study shows that labor regulations across industries slow wage growth for low- income workers. <\/li><li>Particularly, inappropriate minimum wages and occupational licensing tends to hurt income growth among the poor more than among higher-income workers. <\/li><li>The same effect is also observed for would-be entrepreneurs who face barriers to entering certain industries because of regulatory costs and fees.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background no-border-radius\" href=\"https:\/\/kefim.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/economic-freedom-promotes-upward-income-mobility_final_GR.pdf\">Read the study here [ENG]<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Economic freedom promotes income mobility because it ensures equal opportunities. On the contrary, over-regulation of markets and clientelism pose artificial obstacles to individual economic pursuits, promoting specific interests. As far as Greece is concerned, the study highlights the need for further liberalization of the labor market, the opening of professions, and the improvement of the quality of the rule of law.&#8221; commented <strong>Miranda Xafa<\/strong>, member of KEFiMs academic board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf governments are genuine in their desire to help low-income workers climb the income ladder during the COVID recovery and beyond, they should take a second look at regulations and look for ways to increase economic freedom in their respective jurisdictions,\u201d said <strong>Vincent Geloso<\/strong>, an assistant professor of economics at George Mason University, senior fellow at the Fraser Institute and co-author of Economic Freedom Promotes Upward Income Mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fraser Institute produces the annual Economic Freedom of the World report in cooperation with the Economic Freedom Network, a group of independent research and educational institutes, part of which is KEFiM, in nearly 100 countries and territories.
