The Center for Liberal Studies – Markos Dragoumis (KEFiM) announces today with great pleasure, the Greek Economics Olympiad, a pan-Hellenic knowledge competition in economics and finance for high school students, with the aim of promoting economic literacy among young people in our country.
The Economics Olympiad is organized by KEFiM in collaboration with the Czech Institute of Economic Education (INEV), responsible for the international part of the competition.
This educational initiative aims to contribute to the promotion of economic literacy among young people in our country, a skill necessary for their better preparation in managing personal financial issues, understanding the functioning of the world economy, shielding against populism, and preparing them for an effective and up-to-date contribution to public affairs.
The Greek Economic Olympiad is under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and the Institute of Educational Policy and is organized with the support of the Bank of Greece.
The Scientific Committee of the Economic Olympiad includes eminent economists from academia and the business world.
The competition is organized in four parts:
School tour: It is organized at a school unit level by the responsible teacher with the support of the Economics Olympiad team and is conducted online.
Regional tour: It is organized by KEFiM in collaboration with the local authorities and the partners of the Economics Olympiad in each region.
Final: Organized by KEFiM. This year’s final will be held in Athens.
International final: The five best performers advance to the final of the International Economics Olympiad to be held early next school year in one of the participating countries.
Panagiotis Liargovas, Professor at the Department of Economics at the University of Peloponnese, President of the Center for Planning and Economic Research (KEPE) and a member of the Academic Board of the Economics Olympiad said about the project: “The initiative of KEFiM, to conduct the the Economics Olympiad in Greece is very important, and more necessary than ever in the current situation. Faced with a rapidly changing and connected economic environment, young people need space and incentives to develop their financial knowledge, which will allow them to better understand and manage modern economic challenges.“
The Economic Olympiad is organized since 2016 until today by the Czech Institute of Economic Education (INEV) with the participation of more than 15,000 students from 337 high schools and is held every year in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, while this year it will be held for the first time in Greece, Hungary, the United Kingdom and other countries.
