KEFiM welcomes today’s celebrated acquittal of Soti Triantafyllou after her persecution under the so-called “anti-racist law” for an article on her opinion on Athens voice’s website. This verdict is a landmark in the struggle for the practical establishment of freedom of speech.
From the very first moment, KEFIM stressed that the extremely problematic content of this legislation would make it a means of restricting freedom of speech by cancelling any legitimate intentions of the legislator.
So KEFiM decided to actively assist in covering a significant amount of Mrs. Triantafyllou’s legal fees for the trial, considering the fact that this case exemplifies the serious risks involved in any attempt to restrict freedom of speech.
Mrs. Triantafyllou was represented by Thanasis Anagnostopoulos and Konstantinos Kalliris, while Mrs. Vassiliki Georgiadou, the professor of political science at Panteion, and the writer Mr. Apostolos Doxiadis testified as defense witnesses.
KEFIM is committed to continue through both judicial activism and the battlefield of ideas to vigorously defend freedom of speech, driven by Thomas Jefferson’s saying “I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery”.
