1) What is liberalism for you and what made you join the movement and set your career on it?
First of all I must stipulate that Liberalism is the power of making your own decisions and taking responsibility for the actions of your decisions. Regarding what made me get involved professionally with Liberalism is the fact that liberals usually believe that they should do their job and let politics to politicians. I am convinced that this approach led Greece to today’s crisis and today I believe that it’s not enough to do our job well but to give the battle of ideas in order for politicians to let Greeks prosper just like they do abroad.
2) What are the biggest challenges for classical liberalism at this moment and how can we as liberals fight them?
Liberalism is an ideology that fits in the indiosycransy of the Greeks, this is proved by the fact that Greeks abroad prosper, in liberal countries, whereas the success of the Greeks in the maritime business mirrors the latter argument as the shipping market is one of the most free market in the world. Therefore, what Greeks don’t understand is that they can’t have the protection of the government all the time, on the contrary, what we as Greek liberals should do is intervene and convince the Greek society that the opposite brings results.
3) Do you believe that there is room for liberalism in Greece?
The prospects for liberalism in Greece are way better today than they were few years ago. This is due to the fact that all the other ideologies don’t work in practice and have utterly failed.
Our enemies criticize liberalism for all the wrongs that Greece has right now and this is the biggest challenge that we have to face. Therefore our main goal should be to convince the Greeks that the Greek economy is not free but exactly the opposite just like the international indicators show. In fact, our country is at the bottom of the indicator for economic freedom of the EU and that says a lot.
4) Where do you see Greece in 2021?
The situation in 2021 for Greece wont be radically different from what it is today, if however we as Greeks understand what led us to the crisis, then the road to prosperity is widely open.
5) As a person who has lived, studied and worked abroad, what are the best practises that Greece can adapt from other countries?
Generally speaking i don’t believe in the idea of copying a best practice from abroad because many times these practices are implemented in different environments and its difficult to adjust them in Greece. In my opinion, I believe that the best idea is to focus on the best practices that are already being implemented in Greece and I firmly believe that the maritime market is the best possible example.
